The immune system is one of the primary factors involved in the process. As we get older, the body’s ability to recognize and ward off f invaders deteriorates, leaving us increasingly vulnerable to many serious disorders, including cancer. Scientists have been trying for several years to way to strengthen the immune system— ideally, to make it somehow impervious to the effects of aging.

With biotechnology, researchers may have recently taken a step direction by making it possible to isolate and mass-produce substances that the immune system. Many of these immune-boosting substances, such as interleukin 2, have been tested on cancer and AIDS patients, but some e believe that small doses of certain “immune boosters” may also slow down the process. Whether or not these current immune boosters being tested prove effective in combating aging remains to be seen, but initial results are encouraging.

Other studies of the immune system suggest that aging and decline immune function may result, at least in part, from damage to cells caused by toxic compounds known as free radicals. If true, anti- oxidants will help to avoid si the cell damage.

Vitamins E, C, and beta carotene have already been credited with powerful disease-fighters, with the ability to slow down or prevent a num ailments usually associated with aging. If the new information proves true, and these antioxidants can help slow down the decline of the immune system, their repu will be even more firmly established.
